5/9/11 - 7/9/11 Culzean Castle, Scotland

I'm not smiling, I'm grimacing - the unfamiliar burning orb that is hanging in the sky hurts my skin. Luckily it didn't stay for long.

We had a bit of time to spare between Edinburgh and going to Ireland, so we headed out into the countryside on the west coast of south Scotland. We picked this place because the campground was in the grounds of the Castle. Of course, the grounds are so large that it was still a 15 min walk to get to the front of the castle itself.

The Castle had been massively renovated in the 18th century, and is now more palatial than castle-y. Very beautiful, and the grounds came with a wide and weird bunch of outbuildings and structures – including a walled garden, swan pond, greenhouse, laundry house (which is huge), stables, old smithy, one of only two pagodas in Ireland, an ice house (which could keep ice frozen for a year!) and a gas house where they used to refine their own gas from coal.

After Culzean we spent a night in Prestwick before getting the ferry from Troon – but Prestwick was boring so we didn’t take any photos.

Onwards – to Ireland!

This is the factory where they refined gas from coal - yes, I did make my own 'gas factory' jokes and Jane didn't laugh at any of them. I obviously didn't say them loud or frequently enough.

No, the weather is lovely....really.
P.S.  It rained really, really hard for three days straight.  And it's cold!
